PROPOSALS FOR A MODEL OFPHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH A FORMATIVE APPROACHORIENTED TOWARDS HEALTH

The book Escuela y salud: propuestas de un modelo de educación física con un enfoque formativo orientado a la salud, by Héctor Manuel Icaza Campa, presents a framework to design, conduct, and assess school Physical Education, positioning exercise both as an object of study and as the organizing thread of its contents.

Chapter 1 clarifies the notions of “educational model” and “pedagogical models” as synthetic representations of the teaching–learning process that guide the construction and interpretation of curricula. It emphasizes that these models are not step-by-step recipes; rather, they operate as scaffolds that help integrate teaching styles and strategies according to context.

Chapter 2 describes a Physical Education Model with a formative, health-oriented approach. The formative dimension aims to strengthen character and willpower, and to develop attitudes, habits, abilities, skills, and values, addressing intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and affective dimensions. The health orientation is justified by sedentary lifestyles, overweight/obesity, and non-communicable diseases, and it proposes systematic exercise practice alongside nutrition education.

Chapter 3 structures the proposal into five formative fields: learning motor actions; developing physical capacities; developing skills and abilities; attitudes and values; and health promotion—each with components and means intended to ensure continuity and sequencing.

Chapter 4 proposes diversified assessment (rubrics, checklists, records, questionnaires, and tests), combining objective criteria with the teacher’s professional judgment. It also includes ICHPER–UNESCO benchmarks: motor skill, movement concepts, physical fitness, and an active, healthy school lifestyle.
